Prices only make sense when the same trip is compared. These examples are return travel before island car hire, transfers, excess baggage or SeaLink’s fuel surcharge.

SeaLink child fares apply to ages 5–15. Children aged 0–4 travel free but must still be included in the booking. Students need valid student ID. SeaLink calculates current passenger prices after you select a sailing, so use its live booking total rather than multiplying the adult fare.

Flying to Great Barrier Island

Both airlines land at Claris Airport, about 10–15 minutes by road from Medlands Beach. There is no regular island-wide public transport, so arrange a rental car or transfer before flying.

Barrier Air flies from Auckland to Claris; Sunair connects Aotea with three regional airports.

Barrier Air from Auckland

Barrier Air flies from Auckland Domestic Terminal and North Shore Aerodrome. Auckland Domestic to Claris takes about 25 minutes. Budget around $200 one way for a normal adult fare; advertised seats from $99 are limited. North Shore fares start from $189 one way.

Check in at least 45 minutes before departure. Economy and Premium fares include 20kg checked baggage plus 7kg carry-on. Seat Only includes 7kg carry-on and no checked bag. Surfboards, bikes and other oversized items depend on space and should be arranged before travel.

Island Aviation from North Shore

Island Aviation operates daily scheduled flights from North Shore Airport at Dairy Flat to Claris. The flight takes about 30 minutes. Its current route page lists Standard at $209 and Premium at $229 one way. Limited specials may be cheaper; holiday pricing and fuel surcharges can apply.

Parking for airline passengers at North Shore Airport is free. Text your registration plate to 021 124 5320 after parking; vehicles are left at the owner’s risk.

For frequent travellers or a group, Island Aviation also advertises a 10-flight North Shore–Great Barrier concession pass. Its dedicated concession page currently lists $1,790 total, equal to $179 per flight, while parts of its website show $2,090. Confirm the current total and whether the ten flights can be allocated across your group before paying.

Standard includes 15kg checked baggage plus 7kg carry-on. Premium and concession fares include 20kg checked plus 7kg carry-on. Island Aviation also advertises North Shore–Okiwi flights from $229 one way and occasional off-peak or winter specials around $119–$199. Treat a special as a bonus, not the trip budget. If North Shore is convenient, compare its times and final booking price directly with Barrier Air’s North Shore service.

Sunair from Tauranga, Whangārei and Whitianga

Sunair flies to Claris from:

• Tauranga: about 60 minutes, $390 one way
• Whangārei: about 45 minutes, $390 one way
• Whitianga: about 30 minutes, $390 one way

These services currently run Monday to Friday. Sunair allows 15kg total baggage per passenger and asks travellers to check in 15 minutes before departure. It is not the cheaper Auckland alternative; it is the useful regional alternative.

Taking the SeaLink ferry

SeaLink carries passengers and vehicles from Hamer Street in central Auckland to Tryphena, with selected services continuing to Port Fitzroy. The trip to Tryphena takes about 4.5 hours.

Bring your car if you want freedom to explore or need to carry food, bikes, surfboards and family luggage. Walk on if the lower fare matters more, but arrange transport at the other end. Tryphena is roughly 25 minutes from 175° East at Medlands Beach.

Vehicle passengers should check in 60 minutes before a Great Barrier sailing; walk-on passengers should allow 30 minutes. Facilities depend on the vessel, but can include a café, indoor seating, an upper deck, Wi-Fi and charging points. Keep medication, warm clothing and anything needed during the crossing with you rather than locked in the car.

Sailings can move or be cancelled in poor weather. Check SeaLink travel alerts before leaving for the terminal and avoid tight onward connections.

Getting around Aotea after arrival

If you are not bringing a car, book one before you arrive. As a realistic guide, Great Barrier Island rental cars cost about $60–$120 per day: economy cars start near $60, station wagons near $70, and larger 4WDs or vans around $100–$120. Standard insurance and unlimited kilometres are generally included, but reducing the insurance excess may add about $17–$22 per day. Rental vehicles, private shuttles, electric motorbikes and the People & Post service are available, but supply is limited in summer.

Use the island’s current transport directory for rental and shuttle contacts. Roads are narrow and winding with long unsealed sections, so drive times are longer than the map suggests. Download offline maps before leaving Auckland.
